The Food Chain WebSite
The food web is a complex system used to describe the path that energy takes, through various trophic levels, in a given ecosystem. In a typical food web producers, such as grass and flowers, take the energy of the sun and, through photosynhesis convert that energy into energy rich sugar molecules.
Herbivores consume the produceres and through the aid of bacteria and helpers, break the cellulose down into usable energy. The top level of the ecosystem are the carnivores, they consume the herbivores and convert them into usable energy.
Food webs have been developed over thousands of years and provide a balance between all animals in a ecosystem. A change of any factor in a food web will affect all other parts of the environment. Natural process such as floods, droughts and bushfires can change the natural balance through the loss of plants
and smaller animals who are often unable to escape the fires or rising flood waters. larger animals are able to move to safer surroundings, but often die as there is not enough food available to survive.
Food Web Classes | Example |
Carnivores | Humans, Tigers, Wolves |
Herbivores | Bugs, Rabbits, Mice |
Producers | Plants, Algae |
Detritivores | Bacteria, Fungi |
